Bioinformatician

The Bioinformatician will be a member of the Computational Biology team, which is responsible for developing the infrastructure to deliver increasingly intelligent designs in strain and protein engineering cycles.

Job Description

This role will report to the Director of Computational Biology where the candidate will be responsible for the development of automated cloud-based NGS pipelines as well as machine-learning models for the analysis of large ‘omics datasets. This person will identify opportunities and extract value from internal and external datasets focused on analytical and modeling problems. This individual will be responsible for developing and delivering visualizations and reports (e.g., dashboards), algorithms, and/or tools in support of the portfolio of projects.

This individual will work closely with members of the Strain Engineering, Screening, Fermentation, and Microfluidics teams across the Company. The successful candidate will serve as a member of an integrated cross functional team in the analysis of data sets using advanced analytics techniques such as state-of-the-art statistical analysis or machine learning; supporting the identification of modeling attributes and parameters, applying complex or new algorithms to create descriptive, predictive or prescriptive models to achieve analysis that directly support strategic goals and objectives of lead projects.

This role will make a significant impact on high-priority projects for enEvolv. This individual will provide the intellectual impetus and sense of urgency for analytical initiatives that may encompass the full scope of data and analysis lifecycle management working with other Data Scientists, Developers, and Machine Learning Engineers in this newly formed group.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy robust data processing and analysis pipelines for a variety of NGS protocols and related methods
  • Develop genetic design tools for forward design of enzymes, biosensors, metabolic pathways, and genomes
  • Develop tools for comparative and phylogenetic analysis of genome and metagenome sequence data
  • Develop and incorporate new technologies and machine learning to support protein engineering and design
  • Identify and benchmark available tools and develop new algorithms as needed for use in analysis pipelines
  • Manage the release and deployment of pipelines in a shared cloud computing infrastructure
  • Employ best practices in coding, including thorough testing and documentation of code
  • Support a wide variety of research via data analysis, statistical analysis, and experimental design
  • Work collaboratively with scientists, software engineers, and others across the company

Qualifications 

  • PhD in Computational Biology, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or related discipline
  • Experience with manipulation and visualization of metagenome or NGS datasets
  • Experience with relational databases like Postgres, MySQL, etc.
  • Experience in data science, machine learning, and predictive analytics
  • Proficiency in programming, scripting, querying or statistical analysis languages such as MATLAB, R, Python, or Perl
  • Proven success in the design, development, and deployment of data analysis pipelines
  • Familiarity with best practices in software development, including version control, unit and integration testing, documentation, and deployment
  • Track record of publication of scientific research and/or method development
  • Outstanding communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to effectively collaborate in a dynamic, cross-functional matrix environment

Microfluidics Engineer

We are seeking a Microfluidics Engineer to join our team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and support methods for microfluidic devices and liquid handlers for team scientists.
  • Assist with assay development and application of relevant technologies as a project team member.
  • Support research functions.
  • Develop preventative maintenance routines for supported instrumentation.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with configuring hardware assemblies and instrument-oriented programming language(s) (e.g. Python; LabView).
  • Knowledge of Hamilton or similar liquid handlers - programming methods and applications.
  • Familiarity with statistical data analysis like DOE.
  • Experience with colony pickers.
  • Experience with microbiological methods.

  • Handle complex protocols, assist in experimental design, data analysis, and be able to summarize findings into technical reports
  • Support other team members in the laboratory for process development operations
  • Maintain professional, scientific, and ethical integrity
  • Communicate effectively within the group and with other functional groups in the company
  • Be an excellent team member and highly competent at working collaboratively
  • Must be flexible and willing to work during off hours, weekends as and when required

Desired Skills

  • Molecular cloning and plasmid construction: Isothermal assembly, Golden gate, restriction-based and/or homologous recombination-based cloning
  • Experience w/ Benchling is a plus
  • Hands-on experience building S. cerevisiae, E. coli, and/or other microbial strains
  • A good understanding of microbial physiology and/or fermentation is a plus
  • Well-organized, self-motivated quick learner who is able to handle multiple projects simultaneously

Strain Engineers

  • Design and build plasmids and genomic constructs in E. coli, a gram-positive bacterium and/or S. cerevisiae
  • Screen and identify improved strains on FACS and plate-based assays
  • Grow strains under sterile conditions without the aid of antibiotics
  • Communicate effectively within the group and with other functional groups in the company
  • Be an excellent team member who is highly competent at working collaboratively
  • Support other team members in the laboratory for process development operations
